If you haven't heard, Monsanto is investing $84 million to expand a joint venture with China National Seed Group Corp. China is currently the second largest producer of corn in the world. And, as Matthew Dillon pointed out in OCM's newsletter this month, the Chinese government gave approval to biotech corn and soybeans a week after Monsanto announced the new joint venture. Interesting. What better way to meet its goal of doubling profits next year than to get the number two global player sowing its expensive traits.
