Our Goal: An Open and Fair Seed Marketplace
Nothing is more fundamental to American agriculture than seeds. Concentration and unfair trade practices in the crop seed and genetics industry are limiting farmers’ access to, and choice of, modern varieties at competitive prices. The government’s role to create, maintain and enforce pro-competitive market behavior rules has been weakened.
The OCM Seed Concentration Project pursues aggressive and appropriate pro-market regulation to bring fairness, innovation and competition back to the U.S. crop seed industry. We engage in public education and advocacy, while building a lasting foundation to achieve these goals. Learn more (click on image)
Corporate Consolidation in the Seed Industry
The problem of consolidation in the
seed industry is well known. One company in particular, the Monsanto
Company, controls a high percentage of the global seed market and
continues to increase its dominance by acquiring or merging with a
significant number of companies in its industry.
Monsanto has acquired dozens of independent seed companies in the last
decade. It controls 70% of the transgenic corn market, more than 90% of
the transgenic soybean market, and 90% of the transgenic cotton seed market. View data on Monsanto's acquisitions and market dominance
Our Strategy
OCM works to bring fairness and competition back to the U.S. seed industry by:
✦ Soliciting state attorneys general to participate in a joint investigation and
potential lawsuit relating to alleged violations of U.S. antitrust and trade
practice laws in the seed industry. Learn more (click on image)
✦ Mobilizing and maintaining grassroots pressure through a public education
campaign. Learn more (click on image)
